Friday Faves - Children's Books Part 2

Big Topics for Little Readers

As we continue to grow our home library, I’m on the hunt for books that help our littles understand big topics. Things like diversity, bullying, death, emotions, etc. Parents need all the tools we can get our hands on to help explain these big ideas.

I recently put out a call for your favorite children’s books on these topics, and I’ve got a great list to share. Some we’ve read and love as well, others are new to us and I’m eager to get our own copy. Do you have a favorite that’s not included? Send it my way and I’ll add it to the list!

I Am Fine - Dr. Daniela Owen, Ph.D., an assistant professor of clinical psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, has published her first book specifically to help children deal with the complications of stress and anxiety from the COVID Epidemic. This book is a mindfully written self-help guide to aid children in dealing with stress and anxiety, by uncovering their emotions and following a simple calming routine.

NOT TOO BIG…NOT TOO SMALL…JUST RIGHT FOR ME - The book is geared to teach children that we are all different in some way and we should all celebrate who we are. It explains dwarfism in a simple way and answers some of the most common questions asked by children. The book is meant to be a tool to open up conversation that can be used by anyone at home or in a classroom setting.

The Mindful Dragon - Having a pet dragon is very fun. You can teach your dragon to sit, stand, roll over, and you can even potty train him...But what if your dragon is worried about so many things? He worries about the past, and about the future....What do you do? You teach him about mindfulness - You teach him to be mindful! A must have book for children and parents to teach kids the importance of mindfulness, focus and peace.

What Should Danny Do? - FUN. INTERACTIVE. EMPOWERING. THE BOOK THEY'LL LOVE TO READ AGAIN AND AGAIN! With 9 Stories in 1, the fun never ends! What Should Danny Do? is an innovative, interactive book that empowers kids with the understanding that their choices will shape their days, and ultimately their lives into what they will be.

The Invisible String - Parents, educators, therapists, and social workers alike have declared The Invisible String the perfect tool for coping with all kinds of separation anxiety, loss, and grief. This heartwarming picture book for all ages explores questions about the intangible yet unbreakable connections between us, and opens up deeper conversations about love.

Wilbert the Wombat Social Distances - Even the animals in Australia have to social distance! A mysterious flu has spread from the brightly coloured lorikeets to their friends and neighbors, and nobody knows why. Doctor Kookaburra is doing everything she can to help take care of the animals that are sick, but she also needs to quickly come up with a cure. Wilbert the Wombat and his friends all must spend more time at home in what the Doctor is calling quarantine, and also practice social distancing when out and about, so that less animals get sick. And this is where this heartwarming story of self-care and compassion begins. Wilbert must learn how to take care of himself, so that he and his friends can be healthier and not spread the flu any further. If they are able to succeed, many lives will be saved and they can travel to wonderful places again! So can they do it? Read on to find out…

Not So Different - Not So Different is a picture book encouraging young children to embrace their differences and celebrate diversity. A fun rhythmic read, it can be used as a tool to start necessary conversations with our babies about differences in the world.

Cool Jolly Greg and His Slim Fit Pants - Greg is endlessly JOLLY and EXCEEDINGLY cool…and one of the most popular guys in school. On the day he turns from 9 to 10 he throws a party for the ages and receives a present that changes everything—a phone that can do absolutely anything. By the time summer ends and school rolls around, everyone in school has a phone too…and soon, the impacts creep in everywhere. An absolute joy to read, Cool Jolly Greg is a funny, vibrant story for all school-age children about the importance of personal connection, play, and presence in the moment.

Ned: Who Am I Really? - “It was a regular day in a regular year. Ned was out in the garden when a thought flew past his ear.” A story for children of all ages about a young boy’s journey of self-discovery. Guided by “the thought” and his Nanny next door, Ned delightfully questions his own identity and begins to experience a much deeper awareness of his true self. Ned’s fantastical adventure inspires the natural curiosity of children and encourages them to explore the spirituality of who they really are.

Please share more of your favorite children’s books in the comments, or send me an email! I’d love to update this list frequently.
